Your DIY Sugaring Kit: What Youโ€™ll Need

Easy Microwave Sugar Wax For Removing Unwanted Hair

Before you begin, gather your tools and ingredients.

A little preparation makes all the difference for a smooth process.

Kitchen Tools:

  • Pyrex or any microwave-safe glass measuring cup with a handle: This is essential for safety.
  • A small mason jar or another microwave-safe container for storing your wax.
  • A long wooden stick or spoon for stirring.
  • A pot holder or wooden cutting board to protect your countertop from heat.
  • A pair of oven mitts.

Ingredients:

This is the most important part, so be patient and follow the steps carefully.

You’ll need to watch the wax closely to prevent it from burningโ€”I learned that the hard way!

  1. In your Pyrex measuring cup, mix all the ingredients: sugar, lemon juice, salt, and water. Stir until they’re fully combined.
  2. Place the cup in your microwave and cook until the mixture boils. Take it out to stir occasionally to prevent burning.
  3. Continue to cook until the wax turns a rich, golden-brown color, which should take about 6 to 8 minutes.
  4. Using your oven mitts, carefully remove the hot cup and place it on your heat-safe surface. The wax will be runny and very hot. Continue to stir it with your wooden stick as it cools and thickens.
  5. When the wax is no longer too hot to touch (you can test a tiny bit), lightly grease your storage jar. Pour the warm wax into the jar and let it cool completely.

Pro-Tip: Storing your wax in a glass jar allows you to easily reheat it in the microwave whenever you’re ready for your next session.

Essential Safety Tips for DIY Sugaring

Working with hot sugar can be dangerous, so letโ€™s talk safety first.

These simple precautions will help you avoid burns and accidents.

  • Use the right container. Always use a microwave-safe glass container with a handle. This is non-negotiable for safe handling.
  • Protect your hands and surfaces. Have your oven mitts and pot holder ready before you even start. This prevents burns and spills.
  • Keep your space clear. Make sure kids and pets are not running around your workstation. A spill of hot sugar wax can cause serious burns.

With safety covered, youโ€™re ready to learn how to apply the wax.

The Sugaring Process: How to Wax Yourself

This hard wax method is easy to learn and perfect for at-home use. Just follow these steps for a smooth result.

  1. Prep your skin. Use a few folded paper towels to make sure the area you’re waxing is completely dry. For areas like your legs or underarms, you can use a small amount of talcum powder, but itโ€™s best to avoid it in the bikini area.
  2. Ready the wax. Take off any jewelry that might get in the way. Use slightly wet fingers to pinch off a good-sized ball of cooled wax. This will prevent it from sticking to your fingers.
  3. Apply and pull. Pull your skin taut. Spread the sugar ball over the hair in the opposite direction of hair growth. Then, swiftly pull it off in the same direction of hair growth.
  4. Soothe the skin. Immediately place your palm on the freshly waxed spot to soothe the area. Continue applying and pulling until youโ€™re done.

Aftercare: Your Post-Wax Skincare Routine

Your skin will feel sensitive after waxing, so a proper aftercare routine is crucial to prevent irritation and keep it soft.

  1. Wipe your skin with a clean, damp washcloth to remove any leftover sugar residue.
  2. Use a pair of tweezers to pluck any short, leftover hairs.
  3. Gently exfoliate. Make a paste with two tablespoons of baking soda and water. Gently massage it into your skin to remove dead skin cells and bacteria. Rinse it off after a few minutes.
  4. Moisturize. Finish by applying aloe vera gel or honey to soothe and hydrate your skin. If you use honey, remember to wash it off after several minutes.

A Few More Key Things to Remember

  • Let your skin breathe. After waxing your bikini area, it’s best to stay without panties for the rest of the day to prevent friction and bruising.
  • Choose loose clothing. Wear tops with wide armholes, like tank tops, if you wax your underarms. For your legs, avoid leggings or tight jeans. The goal is to prevent any friction on your sensitive, newly-waxed skin.

I hope you enjoyed this easy guide to making microwave sugar wax.

Itโ€™s a great way to get salon-smooth skin without leaving home.

  1. I am in the process of making this now and I am amazed at how quickly and easily it came together! Excited to give it a trial run this afternoon!

    1. Hi Lisa,
I’m glad you’re trying out the Microwave sugar wax.
Please feel free to come to share your results with me.
      Thanks a lot.
      xx, Buayifa.

    1. Hi Nicole,
It should be enough to wax both legs because you’d be using the ball of sugar wax over and over until you can’t use it anymore.
But to be on the safe side, you can double the recipe.
      I hope this helps.
      xx, Buayifa.

  2. Hi thanks for the recipe, is the wax supposed to be thin? After it cooled completely, I found it to be too running to use without a strip on top. Is this wax supposed to be used with strips or did I do something wrong. How do I make it thicker?

    1. Hi Shelley,
This microwave sugar wax is supposed to be thick and does not require waxing strips.
I’m not sure why yours came out runny. But you can add more sugar to make it thicker.
Here’s what I’d do if my wax is too runny:
Add half a cup of sugar and a teaspoon of water to a microwave-safe bowl and heat it until it is melted and syrupy but not brown yet.
Then I’d pour it into the runny batch, and cook for a few minutes.
Keep your eyes on it, take it out, and stir every 10 to 30 seconds, to make sure it’s not burning.
Once both old and new are well incorporated, bring the wax out of the microwave, place it on a dry folded dishcloth and keep stirring until it cools.
      This should thicken it up.
      I hope this helps.
Let me know if it worked for you. If not, just make it on a stovetop with this hard sugar wax recipe.
      xx, Buayifa.

    1. Hi Reine,
I’m not sure how long the microwave sugar wax takes to cool.
And that’s because the microwave bowl you used to make it would stay hot for a while.
But once you get your sugar wax out of the microwave, keep stirring it. Please wear oven mitts.
As the wax cools, it gets thicker.
When it gets to the point where you have to force it with the spoon, that’s when you can touch it.
But have a bowl of cold water on the side.
So when you touch the wax, and it’s still hot, you can quickly dip your hand in cold water.
Once your microwave bowl is warm enough to touch, your wax is almost cool.
Maybe 15 to 20 minutes at most.
      I hope this helps.
      xx, Bree.
