5 Simple Tips For Applying Matte Lipstick Perfectly (Liquid or Solid)
Don’t you wish you could apply your matte lipstick perfectly every time?
That’s most of us who use matte lipstick.
We don’t like our matte lipstick to look dry, flaky, or crackly.
Just the other day, I was getting ready to go out.
After applying my liquid matte lipstick, I noticed it was rough.
So I wiped off the lipstick, scrubbed my lips, and used lip balm before reapplying.
This time, it looked smoother and prettier.
And I wondered why I don’t exfoliate my lips as often as I should.
This post will show you tips for applying matte lipstick perfectly, whether liquid or solid, so you don’t toss it out thinking it’s the problem.

How to apply your matte lipstick perfectly every time.
Yes, some brands might be bad, but sometimes, we don’t apply the product correctly.
The one thing that changes how your matte lipstick looks after application is your lip care routine.
Follow these steps, and your matte lipstick application will always come out smooth and moisturized:
1. Prioritize lip exfoliation
Exfoliating your lips is the first step to ensure your matte lipstick applies correctly.
We often focus on face and body exfoliation but skip our lips.
Lips get dry quickly from makeup products and the weather.
If your lips aren’t exfoliated, your lip makeup, whether matte or glossy, will always look rough and dry.
So, how do you exfoliate your lips?
- Mix 1 teaspoon of brown sugar with 1 teaspoon of honey.
- Rub this mixture on your lips and scrub gently with your finger.
- Wipe off with a damp paper towel or makeup wipes, or rinse with tepid water.
- And repeat if necessary.
- Don’t use any hard or dry towel on your lips to avoid bruising.

2. Moisturize your lips regularly
The next step in applying matte lipstick perfectly is ensuring your lips are well-moisturized.
After exfoliating, moisturize your lips with a hydrating lip balm.
My favorite is Carmex(affiliate link), but Burt’s Bees(affiliate link) is another excellent choice.
Moisturizing keeps your lips soft and hydrated, reducing cracking or flaking.
Applying matte lipstick is easier when your lips are moisturized, giving you that smooth, non-dry look.

3. Apply lipstick
After moisturizing, apply the lipstick.
You’ll notice that the product applies easily and smoothly because it has a smooth and moisturized canvas.
You can use these same steps using creamy, matte, or glossy lip products.
4. Nighttime lip care
After a day of wearing makeup, take care of your lips at night.
Before bedtime, wipe your makeup and do your nighttime skincare routine.
Then, exfoliate your lips with the honey sugar scrub and use lip balm.
This ensures you wake up with soft, smooth, moisturized lips ready for a fresh lipwear application.

5. Additional tips
- Choose quality products. Sometimes, the issue lies with the product itself. Invest in good-quality matte lipsticks. I love this liquid matte red lipstick by FARAH(not an affiliate link).
