In this blog post, I’ll show you everything I changed in my skincare routine to reduce breakouts.

Breakouts can be very annoying.

And it might feel like you’re doing everything right but still breaking out.

But just some tiny changes can help you control breakouts.

Let’s look at them.

You know we all have different skin types.

What works for me might not work for you.

So take this as a guide.

Anyway, here are the changes I made to my skincare routine for breakouts and to get healthier skin:

1. Change your face towel often

So, I first used one towel to dry my face and body.

But when I introduced a face towel, my skin improved.

However, after a while, I noticed I was still breaking out.

That’s because bacteria collects on towels, which can transfer to your face when you dry with them.

So, I decided to change my face towel every other day.

And I’ve noticed less breakouts.

Some people even use a fresh towel every day to dry their faces.

So first, stop using your body towel on your face.

Invest in small face towels or washcloths(affiliate link) to dry your face.

And make sure to change them at least three times a week or use a clean towel daily.

2. Introduce a gentle cleanser to your skincare routine to control breakouts

Another thing that improved my skin and reduced breakouts was introducing a cleanser into my skincare routine.

I used to wash my face with body soap. Lol.

Then I moved to a face wash, which was okay for the time.

But I still had breakouts because I was washing, not cleansing deeply.

Then, I recently added a gentle face cleanser to my routine, making a difference.

Cleansers remove dirt, excess oil, and makeup, creating a clean canvas for skincare products to work their magic.

Remember, the right cleanser depends on your skin type – dry, oily, or somewhere between.

So, do your research and choose wisely!

3. Toss the sponges and brushes, and apply foundation with your fingers

Ditching the makeup brushes and sponges for my clean fingers changed my skin, too.

Makeup brushes and sponges can become breeding grounds for bacteria.

Which leads to crazy breakouts.

So toss those makeup brushes and use your clean fingers to apply foundation.

Also, your fingers’ warmth melts the product and helps it apply evenly for a more natural finish.

So wash your hands and apply foundation with your clean fingers.

But if you have time to wash makeup brushes and sponges daily, continue using them.

4. Make sure you’re double cleansing

Washing my face in the morning seems intuitive.

But I never saw the need for an evening cleanse.

I only washed my face in the evening, occasionally.

My pillowcase collected its fair share of dirt and oil throughout the night.

Transferring germs back to my skin.

But cleansing both morning and night ensures a clean slate and helps prevent overnight breakouts.

5. Washing your hair regularly

Keeping my hair clean helped stop my skin from breaking out.

Before, I had no idea that dirty hair could carry bacteria that could worsen my skin.

But when I started washing my hair regularly, I noticed my skin looked much better and cleaner.

Still, using too much shampoo can make my hair dry.

So, I co-wash to clean my hair without removing its natural oils.

This brings us to the next point.

6. Wash your face last after hair-washing

So, I thought I had found the solution when I started regular hair washing.

But I had no idea that the shampoo and conditioner that dripped down my face was helping, too.

In addition to drying out my skin, the hair products’ dripping also clogged my pores.

And that was mainly because I used to wash my face first, even when washing my hair.

So I switched and washed my hair first, showered afterward, and washed my face last.

Washing your face last after showering is a crucial step.

It allows you to rinse away hair products on your face and prevents clogged pores and potential irritation.

In turn, it reduces breakouts.

7. Adding gentle, regular exfoliating to your skincare routine can also reduce breakouts

Over-exfoliating is a recipe for disaster.

But gentle exfoliation at least once a week works wonders.

It removes dead skin cells, revealing brighter, smoother skin and allowing skincare products to penetrate deeper.

Choose a mild exfoliant suitable for your skin type and scrub in gentle circular motions.

Also, if you use homemade scrubs like me, grind the exfoliating ingredient before mixing it with the liquid.

Grinding the exfoliating ingredient into smaller granules makes your scrub less abrasive and gentler on the skin.

8. Be consistent with your skincare routine for breakouts

To avoid breakouts, be consistent with your routine.

We know routines can sometimes be daunting.

But don’t return to using your body skin products on your face.

You’ll only undo all the progress you’ve made so far.

9. Be consistent with your skincare products that are currently working

Also, don’t start jumping from product to product because someone recommended them.

Stick to the products that are currently working for your skin.

10. Nutrition plays a significant role too

While these external changes were significant, I realized nutrition plays a major role in our skin’s health.

Staying hydrated, managing stress, and eating a balanced diet are equally important.

Drinking plenty of water keeps my skin plump.

Also, when I eat green vegetables like kale and spinach, I notice my skin is brighter and with fewer breakouts.
